  • Full Biography
  • Robert Riewerts, M.D. retired from the Southern California Permanente Medical Group at the end of 2021. He continues to work with Kaiser Permanente part-time as a Pediatrician. In addition, he currently works in the Student Health Center at the University of Southern California.

After completing his undergraduate degree at UC Davis, Bo received his medical degree from the University of Southern California (now Keck School of Medicine). He completed his internship and residency training in Pediatrics at Los Angeles County/USC . Bo is board certified in Pediatrics and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

During his 30 year career, he served as the Regional Chief of Pediatrics for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG). In that role, he provided leadership and oversight of the pediatric care provided by one of the largest self-governing medical groups in the country. SCPMG has over 500 Pediatricians and Pediatric Subspecialists that provide care for nearly one million Pediatric Kaiser Permanente members in 190 medical offices and 13 hospitals across Southern California.

Bo joined SCPMG in 1999. He served the group in numerous other leadership capacities including Module Lead, Assistant Chief of Service, Chief of Service and Elected Board Member.  Under his leadership, the pediatric care provided by Kaiser Permanente was marked by improvements in clinical performance, nationally recognized research and implementation of a complete electronic health record. Through a strong culture of innovation and collaboration, Kaiser Permanente has achieved unprecedented top 10 national rankings for six pediatric clinical measures, including being the best in the country for the assessment of childhood obesity with universal measurement of the BMI at every pediatric office visit. Under Bo’s leadership, SCPMG achieved Baby Friendly status at every KP hospital that provides newborn care in Southern California. This was an accomplishment that was recognized by Michelle Obama at a White House ceremony in 2012 honoring Kaiser for leading the effort in our country to address childhood health with effective lactation support. During his tenure, the Reach Out and Read Program was implemented at every KP site in Southern California, whereby books are provided at office visits daily by the SCPMG Pediatricians while providing nearly two million appointments each year.

In the final 10 years of his career, Bo took on the role of Pediatric Clinical Lead for the Care Management Institute for Kaiser Permanente. This was a national role, providing oversight and strategic consultation for the efforts being directed at the entire Kaiser population to address Total Health including pediatric weight management, interventions utilizing directed clinical workflows with the electronic health record and improving breastfeeding rates.

In addition to the leadership accomplishments during his career, Dr. Riewerts maintained an active Pediatric office practice and was one of 6 neonatologists providing care in the busy Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park. He was continuously involved in teaching throughout his career, serving as an attending physician in the Pediatrics Residency Training Programs at both the Keck School of Medicine and the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. He regularly mentored nurse practitioners, high school students, pre-med college students and medical students in his clinical practice. He has always been actively involved in Community Service, serving on the Board of Directors for Foothill Family Service from 2002-2011, participating in the Kaiser Permanente Gulf Coast Rebuilding Project in New Orleans and serving as a Board Member of the Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley, the Pasadena Community Health Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House and Camp and the Salerni Collegium at USC. He recently joined the HPA Advisory Board at UCD.

Bo has been married to Susan Regas for over 45 years, a woman he met on his first day as an undergraduate at UCD in the WEB/EM dorm. They raised three beautiful children together in Pasadena where they have lived since 1982. Together, they have completed the final payments on 3 separate college tuitions and successfully hosted two weddings for their daughters! Bo loves the outdoors, primarily hiking, biking and skiing in the mountains of California. He has completed numerous triathlons, many long distance bike rides and has climbed several mountains in California including Mount Whitney.
